Why is TASA necessary?

With the advent of digital stereo, the audio level of trailers became an issue with theatre owners and audiences. Trailers were often louder than the features they preceded, and theatres were forced to lower volume, frequently spoiling feature presentations in the process. To address this issue, the studios and digital sound companies created the Trailer Audio Standards Association (TASA). The TASA standard is a measuring technique and an upper-volume limit for trailers that has been adopted by all of the MPA studios.
